Aldi America

Aldi-the German based private label grocery chain-has quietly been expanding its presence in the US, where it now has approximately 1000 stores. On a recent visit to a store in Atlanta, we were impressed by how super value products displayed in the packing cartons could be presented in such a pleasant environment.

The private label "brands" include Clarissa bath tissue, Tandil detergent, Fit and Active chicken broth and Millville cereals. The store we saw in a mixed income neighborhood during the week between Christmas and New Year's was not crowded at all during our mid-day purchase. But the shoppers looked quite content to bag their own products, thanks to the very low prices they paid for their purchases. They even got to purchase products of local interest, such as the collard greens pictured above.
